Fight Falun Gong to Ensure Stability: Newspaper (08/16/2001)
The current fight against Falun Gong is to maintain the country's
overall stability and further promote reform and development, according
to a commentator's article in today's People's Daily.
It is a fact that Li Hongzhi used the Falun Gong organization to
deliberately create chaos and undermine the good situation of stability
and unity, the article said. And he expected, by ganging up with
hostile forces abroad and at home, to overthrow the leadership of
the Chinese Communist Party and change the socialist system.
Over the past year, Li and his followers organized one after another
illegal gatherings to besiege party and government institutions
and media office buildings, the article said. During the illegal
gathering outside Zhongnanhai on April 25, Li even asked his followers
to make it a bloodshedding incident and then put the blame on the
party and government.
Stability is of crucial importance to China's reform, opening and
modernization drive, the article said. Whoever creates unrest and
undermines the country's stability and unity will be condemned by
the nation.
The current fight against Falun Gong is not only a serious political
ideological struggle, but also a political struggle that involves
the maintenance of social stability, it said.
China will never allow its course of reform and opening to be disturbed
and disrupted, since only through reforms and opening to the outside
world will China become stronger and more prosperous.
The article said that although initial successes have been achieved
in the fight against Falun Gong, a lot of work remains to be done.
The article stressed on helping Falun Gong practitioners break
with Falun Gong, while punishing the handful Falun Gong organizers
and wire-pullers according to the law.
In the meantime, priorities should be given to the maintenance
of social stability in order to forge ahead with reform and opening
and the modernization drive, the article said.
