Life, Health, Inviolate Citizen Rights: Xinhua Commentary (08/04/2001)

A Xinhua News Agency commentary says today that Li Hongzhi and his Falun Gong cult used people's desire for health to spread superstition, and disturbed people's ideas by claiming that Falun Dafa is the only way to avoid calamity.

The commentary says that from the uncovered facts, people should have a clear understanding of the Falun Gong cult, which defrauded practitioners and inveigled them into extremities.

"Life is the most precious thing for people, and health is the guarantor of life," according to the commentary. Citizens have the right to ask for help from the government and from other people.

The Party and the government always pay great attention to the health of people, and also sets health as a key goal to be achieved by socialism.

Since the People's Republic of China was founded in 1949, the average life-span in the country has been raised from 35 to 70, and the infant mortality rate has been decreased from 20 percent to 31.4 per 1,000 births.

Li Hongzhi and his Falun Gong cult took the opposite way and said that disease is a "preexisting sin." He misled the Falun Gong practitioners to superstition, and asked them to refuse to go to the hospital. What he did severely infringed on the life and health rights of the Falun Gong practitioners.

China has explicit laws protecting the health rights of citizens. Li Hongzhi, however, performed a spiritual poisoning act to lead Falun Gong practitioners into a dead end. He is the real culprit.

The commentary calls on people to arm themselves with science and leave no room for Li Hongzhi and other cultists
