Cultists Hacked Dead in Clash ( 12/15/2000)
At least 11 cult members were hacked to death when two rival cultist
groups armed with bladed weapons clashed in the southern Philippines
on Wednesday, the Philippines News Agency(PNA) reported Friday.
The PNA quoted a police report as saying the bloody incident erupted
when some 100 cultists belonging to the Pulahan cult swooped down
on a religious shrine in Surigao del Norte Province where 200 members
of the Philippine Benevolent Missionary Association(PBMA) were attending
a religious conference.
According to a police report, the Pulahan cult armed with bolos
barged into the PBMA shrine at around 8:30 in the evening and held
hostage the 200 PBMA cult members there.
Violence erupted thereafter inside the building as each group was
armed with bladed weapons.
The report said the 11 fatalities were all members of the Pulahan
group. A security guard of the shrine suffered a hack wound on his
left arm.
Policemen in the province rushed to the scene to prevent further
bloodshed. Police said they are set to file criminal charges against
the parties involved.
