Nigerian Students Clash With Cult Members (11/17/2000)
Hundreds of Nigerian college students Thursday stormed a meeting
place of cult members, killing several of them.
Two cult members, while attending the meeting held at Lagos State
University, were lynched on the campus, with four others burnt to
death near the gate of the university, according to unconfirmed
reports.
After the incident, police commissioner Mike Okiro of Lagos State
appealed the students to calm down and leave the arrest of the cult
members to the police.
But no arrest has been made as the cult members had already disappeared
by the time the police arrived at the scene.
Fatiu Akesode, vice chancellor of the university, thanked the students
for their efforts to rid the campus of cult members but warned them
not to take the law into their own hands, urging them to hand over
any cult members under their control to the authorities in stead
of acting on their own.
The Nigerian government has banned all cult activities in universities
and colleges across the country. Cult activities have caused several
deaths of students in the past.
